Stering A. Smith

Sterling Albert Smith, 94, passed away at his home on Saturday, August 18, 2018. He has moved on to his heavenly home and joined our mom, Charlotte (Herbst) Smith who passed away in January 2016.

Born in Bittersville, PA (Lower Windsor Township) on April 16, 1924, he was a son of Edward and Lottie (Beaverson) Smith.

Sterling served our country during World War II in the 236th Army Air Force as a munitions worker, stationed at Deopham Green in England, and was honorably discharged. He was a cabinet maker, retiring in 1986 from the former Kapri Kitchens in Dallastown, PA. He also enjoyed making crafts out of wood in his free time.

He is survived by seven children. Fairie Toomey and husband Kenneth of York, Robert Smith of Trinidad, CO, Daniel Smith and wife Karen of Port Orange, FL, Ben Smith and wife Sherry of Felton, Lynna Ross and husband Edward of York, Luanne Grafton, and Crystal Massimore and husband Robert, all of Dallastown; six grandchildren: Lisa Grafton, Christopher Ross, Katie Ross, Jessica Ross-Danielisz, Ted Smith and Nicole Rider Veseth; one great-grandson, Gavin Ross. Also surviving Sterling is one sister, Julia Kinard of Windsor. He was preceded in death by his siblings Gertrude, Nettie, Ray, Donald, Esther and Clara.

A viewing will be held from 10 to 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 22 at Springwood Chapel, 2360 Springwood Road, York, PA. The service will follow at 11:00 AM with Sterling's son-in-law, Pastor Edward J. Ross III officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery, 10384 Winterstown Road, Red Lion. Full Military Rites by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Gladfelter Funeral Home of York is in charge of the arrangements.

Our dad rarely would say "good-bye" when leaving; instead, we could count on him to say…

"CHEERIO!"
